King James 1 made Villiers Viscount in 1616, Earl in 1617, Marquis in 1618 and Duke of Buckingham in 1623. Villiers was appointed Lord High Admiral in 1619.
George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, is celebrated by an exclusive dining society the "Villiers Club" at Oxford University (only 27 miles from Villiers Hotel).
