What To Typically Expect At A Hindu Wedding

From Ganesh Puja to the Vidaai

Attending your first Hindu wedding? Whether the day embraces contemporary practices or follows traditional customs, here's what you might expect from Hindu wedding rituals.

Ganesh Puja

At the start of the wedding ceremony it's customary to offer a prayer to Lord Ganesh, seeking his blessings for a harmonious and auspicious wedding.

As the groom arrives at the wedding venue he's greeted warmly by the bride's family. They perform the traditional Aarti ceremony showering him with flower petals as a symbol of their respect and acceptance.

Jai Mala

The couple share a special moment by exchanging beautiful floral garlands symbolising their mutual acceptance and commitment to each other.

Madhuparka Ceremony

In some traditions a significant ritual takes place where the bride's parents wash the groom's feet with yoghurt, ghee and honey and offer him milk and honey to drink.

During the Kanyadaan the bride's father offers his daughter's hand to the groom, representing her journey from her paternal home to her now marital one.

Hasta Milap

This is the moment when the bride and groom hold hands, signifying their unity and dedication to one another.

Mangal Phere

The bride and groom encircles the sacred fire seven times (known as pheras). They also exchange vows and recite Vedic verses.

As the pheras taking place the couple takes seven symbolic steps together symbolising their journey through life and the seven sacred vows they exchange.

Mangalsutra and Sindoor

As a gesture of marital commitment the groom presents his partner with the Mangalsutra which is a sacred necklace. He also applies sindoor (vermilion) to his brides hair parting.

As the ceremony concludes elders and priests give their blessings to the wedding couple, wishing them a lifetime filled with joy and prosperity in their marital journey.

As the bride bids farewell to her childhood home and sets off on a new adventure with her spouse, it makes an emotional moment filled with heartfelt goodbyes and best wishes
