Traditional Pakistani Wedding Customs

Traditional Attire

It's traditional for Pakistani brides to wear brightly coloured shalwar kameez, saris, or lehengas. Red is often popular as it is the colour of love. The groom wears black or white traditional clothing or Western suits.

Nikkah

The Nikkah (also known as Nikah) is when the couple exchanges vows and make promises. Before this however, a traditional called Mehr takes place where the groom offers his partner gifts and money. 

Munh Dikhai

The Munh Dikhai tradition might take place during the Nikah. The stand in front of a mirror with a shawl covering their heads and give each other honey to eat which repersents their sweet marriage. 

Marriage Contract

As the traditional ceremonies conclude the couple signs their marriage contract in the precense of two make witnesses. They then repeat “qubool hai” (I accept) three times to seal their union. 

Walima

The wedding reception celebration is known as the Walima or Valima. Often the grooms family organises this event filled with amazing food, music, entertainment and dancing. 

Traditional Cusine

One important aspect of Pakistani weddings is the food. The cusine on offer is bursting with colour, flavour and spices. A traditional dish can be tikka kebab, a popular favourite halal dish.

 

Mehndi Ki Rasam

The bride is seated and surrounded by her family. Her relatives then apply mehndi onto her hands whilst feeding her sweet treats liks M&Ms.

Rukhsati

After the grand celebration the Rukhasti follows. This is where the bride and groom say goodbye to everyone and leave the venue with their elder family members by their side.
